B. Sonny Bal, MD, JD, MBA, PhD
Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer, President & Principal Financial Officer
Dr. Sonny Bal has served on SINTX’s Board of Directors since February 2012, as Chairman of the Board of Directors since August 2014 and as President and Chief Executive Officer since October 2014. Dr. Bal is retired Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery with 25 years of experience in Adult Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Missouri – Columbia. He served as Adjunct Professor of Material Sciences at the University of Missouri at Rolla. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and the International Society of Technology in Arthroplasty. Dr. Bal has served on the editorial board of several peer-refereed orthopedic journals and has published extensively on the silicon nitride ceramics, and continues that work, with presentations at scientific forums worldwide.
Dr. Bal holds an M.D. from Cornell University, an M.B.A. from Northwestern University, a J.D. from the University of Missouri and a Ph.D in Materials Engineering from the Kyoto Institute of Technology.
Eric A. Stookey, MBA
Eric Stookey most recently served as the President of the Extremities-Biologics division at Wright Medical Group, Inc. (Nasdaq:WMGI) until August 2014. Mr. Stookey served in various other marketing and sales positions at Wright Medical Group, Inc. since 1995, including as the Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer from January 2010 to November 2011, as the Vice President North American Sales from 2007 to January 2010, as the Vice President U.S. Sales from 2005 until 2007, as the Senior Director of Sales, Central Region, from 2003 to 2005 and as the Director of Marketing for Large Joint Reconstruction Products from 2001 to 2003. Mr. Stookey was also employed by DePuy Orthopedics, Inc. from 1993 to 1995.
Mr. Stookey holds an M.B.A. from Christian Brothers University and a B.S. in Business from the Indiana University School of Business.
David W. Truetzel, MBA, CPA
David W. Truetzel has approximately 20 years of experience in the financial services and technology industries in both a consultative and operating capacity. Mr. Truetzel is a General Partner of Augury Capital Partners, which he co-founded in 2006. He was a General Partner of Hela Capital Partners, a partnership focused on leveraged buyouts in the financial services industry, from 2001 through 2005. In addition, Mr. Truetzel was a Managing Director of Gryphon Investments II, a technology focused venture capital firm, from 2000 through June of 2004.
Prior to the sale of Kinexus Corporation, a Gryphon portfolio company, to Advent Software, Mr. Truetzel served as the Acting Chief Financial Officer of Kinexus Corporation. From 1985 to 1995, he worked in the Corporate Finance Division of A.G. Edwards & Sons, with the last five years of his tenure serving as Managing Director with responsibilities for new business development. From 1995 to 1997, Mr. Truetzel served as Chief Financial Officer of Paymentech, a New York Stock Exchange listed subsidiary of First USA.
Mr. Truetzel managed the financial function and successfully assisted Paymentech in its initial public offering and secondary offering and orchestrated approximately 22 acquisitions over a two-year period. In 1998, he joined Llama Holdings, a merchant-banking firm, where he executed numerous merger and advisory assignments and participated as principal on several buyouts. In 1999, he joined Paylinx Corporation as Chief Financial Officer and was responsible for all financial functions, including a successful $30 million private equity financing and sale to CyberSource Corp. Mr. Truetzel sits on the Board of Directors of Enterprise Bank, Inc, Verifi Inc., Clearent, LLC and Paranet, LLC.
Mr. Truetzel holds a B.S. in Accounting from Saint Louis University, an M.B.A. from The Wharton School and is a certified public accountant.
Jeffrey S. White
Jeffrey White has operated in the surgical device and biomaterials industry for 35 years as a senior sales, marketing, business development and chief executive in Fortune 500, mid-size and start-up firms. Mr. White is currently Principal, Medtech Advisory Group LLC, a firm that advises early and mid-stage medtech firms. Most recently he was Global Director of Business Development for Synthes, a $4 billion global orthopedic firm that was acquired by Johnson and Johnson in 2012. Mr. White is a member of the AOSpine and ISASS spine societies and is a Director of Residency Select LLC.
Previously, Mr. White was founder or CEO and board member of three start-up device firms, most recently Applied Spine, now doing business as Rachiotek. Prior to his start-up experiences, he was Senior Director of Business Development and Marketing at US Surgical Corporation where he was instrumental in rapidly growing the firm from $300 million to $1 billion as the highly acquisitive leader in the minimally invasive surgery segment. Mr. White also served as VP and General Manager, Surgery at Richard Allan Medical in Kalamazoo MI.
Mr. White’s main interest is in bringing novel technology solutions to the clinic by leveraging the skills of innovators, surgeons and multiple corporate/financial partners. As a business development and chief executive, Mr. White has executed more than 60 deals valued in excess of $ 1 billion.
Mr. White holds a B.S. cum laude in Biology from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. and resides outside of Philadelphia, PA.
